The art of creating a quality headjoint requires tremendous skill, taking many years to develop. Chris McKenna has dedicated his life to this unique skill, and is considered by many to be one of the finest headjoint makers in the world.
The flute headjoint is absolutely critical in creating a beautiful sound on any flute. The headjoint influences your response, your projection, and your control.
When we play, a 'V' shape of condensation is created on the lip plate at the front. Looking closely at the more conventional head joints that I have played, this 'V' never completed its journey to arrive at its lowest point. Once the air arrived at the front edge of the lip plate with no further support, it dispersed, effectively falling off a cliff edge and dying. With an almost continuous lip plate, the SF by Mckenna allows air to complete its natural journey.
How is the SF by McKenna head joint different?
- A focused and centred sound with noticeably less air noise
- An extraordinary range of dynamics, in particular at the 'PP' end
- Ease of playing, depth and control in the bottom octave
- Crisp, clear and immediate articulation
All headjoints feature a gold riser, which adds color and nuance by using a denser metal for the most critical part, directly where the sound originates. Custom Adler Wings provide focus, clarity, and greater control of dynamics.
Chris McKenna has dedicated his life to the flute. His unique skills and knowledge of the headjoint and sound production are considered by many to make McKenna one of the finest headjoint makers in the world.
The art of creating a quality headjoint requires tremendous skill, taking many years to develop. With the new SF model Chris has worked closely with the internationally renowned flute player and teacher Paul Edmund-Davies to bring Chris's and Paul's dream to life. The culmination of years of development prototypes and trials they have at last come to fruition and between them have developed something which are at last proud to launch this new and unique headjoint.
"The flute headjoint is absolutely critical in creating a beautiful sound on any flute. The headjoint influences your response, your projection, and your control and I believe we have achieved all of these qualities with the SF headjoint." (Chris McKenna)
