On the verge of remembrance...is a three movement, progressive piece for flute and guitar. Each movement explores an aspect of memory and uses it to drive the musical argument of the composition. The first movement, Moderato, is in ABA form. The A section has a chaconne like progression in the guitar while the flute plays an evolving set of motifs. The flute motives occasionally repeat -- like an echo, but mostly they continue to develop, moving towards the climactic B section. Here, the two parts play in a frantic dialogue which dissolves back into a varied return of the A section. The second movement, Mysterioso, is in rondo form. The timbre of the guitar changes with each return, thus adding a distinct sound to each appearance: first pizzicato, then normal, and ending with a tamboura-violente. In this movement the flute and guitar rhythmical interlock with each other that is positively Stravinskian. If the second movement represents the dynamic climax of the piece, the third and final movement is a release from all the tensions of the previous two. The guitar has an elegant, almost sentimental tremolo solo which the flute gently plays its haunting melody. It has a certain nostalgia to it, as it recalls some of the themes heard in the first two movements, and floats above the guitar with Ivesian reverence.
Difficulty level, roughly compared to ABRSM exam grades. 0 is beginner, 9 is advanced (beyond grade 8).
