'There are many ways of explaining exactly how you should perform swing music but of course it's most fun to learn as you play. With Swing Starters you will become aquainted with the idea of swing feel as you work through the book. The book has been organised so that the quaver (or eighth) notes - these are the notes that determine the swing feel - are presented in such a way that you will gradually feel more comfortable in the swing idiom.

The book contains 20 three-part swing exercises and two great bonus piece.

Each 'Starter' begins with a basic rhythm. Practise this well first (if necessary, this can be done without the use of an instrument). This rhythm is then worked into a super-swinging three-part piece, entirely within the jazz tradition. The second and third parts of these pieces can be found in the appendix at the back of the book. Of course you can play the music from this book using three of the same type of instrument but if you can form a mixed trio (using the other books from this series) the music will sound even better.

On the CD, you will hear each piece played complete; then follows just the rhythm section accompaniment. You can playalong with this just using the first part but of course, it will only sound musically balanced if you can playalong with the CD with two other players.' Erik Veldkamp
