'It starts out with a simple E minor cadence which is gradually widened and constantly reappears in harmonically transformed form, alternating with highly rhythmical sections in double time. There is only one tempo which is sometimes relieved by free rubato sections. Both piano and flute should sound very 'songlike'.'
