“Fun!”
Three good wind players will have a great time playing this quirky trio about the weather. Andrew Wilson knows to write for these instruments so although each part has much to do the technical challenges are all approachable. There are ensemble skills needed too and again these are all accessible. Bright and Blowy has plenty of energy and some unpredictability, Misty Monday uses trills dovetailing between instruments to give the appropriate texture, and Rain Games, in a bouncy 6/8, dances along effectively. Each movement would stand alone which is always an added bonus and this really is a perfect piece to play with friends or to use for a student concert. Fun!
From the Publisher
"Everyone has something to say about the weather and in this trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon; all three instruments use their characteristic voices and capabilities to comment on, and describe three types of typically English weather. Bright and Blowy is a picture of a bracing spring morning full of promise and energy. Misty Monday is a favourite with audiences and players alike: the opaque tremolando texture and plangent melody suggest the shrouding of familiar things and places by a deceptive fog. The finale, Rain Games, is a playful fugal movement inspired by the ever-changing patterns that animate rain-splashed puddles.
If you are looking for a piece that demonstrates the versatility and brilliance of this instrumental combination in a thoroughly attractive and memorable way, which is also great fun to play, The Weather Gauge will certainly fit your requirements!"
