“Simple music at its best!”
A playful Ethel Smyth melody is interspersed with something sadder in this lovely if slightly quirky piece. The usual format of fast, slow, fast is extended by a brief reprise of the second tune and a codetta of new material to produce an unexpectedly wistful ending. There is plenty of variety in the scoring too with all instrumental variations covered, adding texture as well as colour to the two principal tunes. This is simple music at its best!
From the Publisher
Ethel Smyth's Two Interlinked French Folk Melodies is a chamber work composed in 1924, adapted from the intermezzo of her opera Entente Cordiale (1923–24). The piece was first published in 1928 by Oxford University Press, originally arranged for Flute, Oboe (or Violin, or Viola), and Piano. In addition to the original parts included in the publication, transposed parts for Alto Flute and Clarinet have been created to give more performance possibilities.
