“A showpiece!”
The subtitle of this extraordinary work is Studies on Extended Technique but that is really only the beginning. A story in seven movements, the music comes not only with full performance notes but also with the script and some arresting gothic illustrations. The full range of contemporary techniques is explored here, including beatboxing, air inhale/exhale, whisper-flute, and a low extension down to A. Anansi the Spider includes narration. and there is some flexibility in the scoring between piccolo and flute, although two are scored specifically. There is so much colour and texture on show, for example in Will-o'-the-Wisp where there is almost no straight sound, and in the sudden change to Chinese style jazz in Baihu. Each movement could stand alone to make an interesting solo, and to play the whole work would be a fascinating highlight of any recital. It could also be turned into a piece of performance art by perhaps using seven players, maybe in costume, possibly with mime added. However you look at it, this is a real showpiece with endless possibilities!
