“Short, sweet and lovely!”
This is a super little work in three distinct sections which sits really well in the main part of the piccolo and allows the instrument to sing as well as dance. The opening ' a silent sorrow' is melismatic with subtle jazz harmonies, 'a lighter gloom' has a more centred melody interspersed with piccolo flourishes and 'joyful' is in a quirky 7/8, showing the piccolo in a more traditional setting. Short, sweet and lovely!
From the Publisher
A perfect piece to demonstrate contrasting moods and expression.
A continuous piece divided into three different parts, that flow from one into the other without interruption, with the titles 1. A silent sorrow, 2. A lighter gloom 3. Joyful. The emotional states suggested by the music, according to the titles, change their nature as the piece progresses, slowly evolving from the initial sense of sorrow to the final joyfulness.
Three Moods was commissioned for the 'Piccolo' section of the Third International Flute Competition 'Severino Gazzelloni' (2014)
