“Sonata Robada for Piccolo and Piano”
Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]
Sonata Robada is a great piece for piccolo players to savour. As with all Mike Mower works, it is full of loosely jazz-based harmonies and rhythms, with that unmistakeable feeling of the freedom of improvisation. Of course it will challenge finger technique, especially in Picc's Elation which simply zips along, but the meandering Dream Scene highlights expressive skills too. The unaccompanied Intervention adds a textural contrast and the Fugato Gelato is a very approachable way in to the whole sonata. It's always good to play in this style and this lovely piece is a winner for sure!
