Wolfgang Hofmann (1922-2003) was hired as a violinist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra at the age of 17. After the Second World War he became a violinist in various orchestras until he began his work as artistic director of the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester in Mannheim in 1959. Hofmann wrote over 150 works of all genres and felt himself to be the heir to Hindemith and Bartok. His music is always practical, written for the instrumentalist and for the listener.
