“A good old-fashioned operatic fantasy!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

This solo with piano on an operatic theme has been written in the traditional Taffanel-type style. A flamboyant introduction is followed by a jaunty theme and three variations. Unusually the first variation is for piano but otherwise this is a good old-fashioned flute fantasy which is fun to play and a real audience pleaser!

From the Publisher

During my studies, and later professional life, in The Netherlands, I came across a small second-hand music shop located at the Govert Flinckstraat, in Amsterdam: Opus 391 Muziekmagazijn. This was one of my most loved shops in the city, nearby my studio, a shop where I spent many hours with the owner, searching for flute music scores. I bought mostly music by Dutch composers and "lost scores". One of the scores I bought was in a medium condition, light brown paper, taped not to fall apart, and the first page had the following header:

à son Elève

J. C. van Haersolte van Haerst.

SOLO POUR LA FLÛTE

avec Accompagnement de Piano

Sur un Thême de l'Opera Anne Boleijn.

par

C. VAN TAL.

Op.36

I have never heard of such piece or composer, but it perfectly fit my purpose. It seemed like a 6-7 minutes concert piece with a well balanced dramatical part and virtuoso movements. The problem was that it was made of a separate flute part and a piano part only, without the flute part above, reason why I have never performed it. At the end of the piano part, it is written "gegraveerd bij F. J. Weygand en Co's Hage".

The well-known flutist C. van Tal was from the city of Utrecht. He composed, in the spirit of the time, smooth variations on the theme "Nel veder la tua costanza" - Lord Percy's Act 2 aria -, from Gaetano Donizetti's Anna Bolena. Van Tal was a member of the Utrecht Collegium Musicum where he succeeded the renown flutist Jan van Boom in 1847.

This is a revised edition, with minor corrections - mostly graphic -, the flute part was added in the piano part/score, and a cover was created to protect the score. I have decided to keep the French titles but all other text is in English for commercial purpose, according to Scherzo Editions' publishing lines.
