From the Publisher

Johann Sebastian Bach contributed to the genre of the trio sonata in three different aspects: sonatas for two melodic instruments and thorough-bass, sonatas for a melodic instrument with harpsichord obbligato and finally sonatas for organ. These three versions are closely related to one another and it is not surprising, considering the performance practice of the 18th century that sometimes single movements and whole sonatas intermingle.

The only examples of the third of these aspects are the organ sonatas BWV 525-530 and the fascinating impression they make can be proved by the fact that every generation of musicians since their composition in around 1727-1729 has adapted and rearranged them. Our edition aims to achieve a version which could possibly have been written by Bach, changing not more than he would probably have changed, but on the other hand not to change everything he could have changed and thus giving flautists access to the beautiful works.
