“Music to cherish.”
This is a beautiful piece of writing from the little-known English composer Georgina Rockstro. She has set a poem about someone looking over a sleeping child or lover, and she crafts the flute line to flow around vocal melody with all the skill of someone who knew exactly how to extract the best from the instrument. The accompaniment is simply constructed too which is useful. This is music to cherish and would certainly make a good encore in any flute and voice recital.
From the Publisher
Serenade ("Rest, my sweet, in gentle slumber") for Flute, Voice, and Piano by Georgina Mildred Rockstro. Georgina Mildred Rockstro was an English composer and musician, notable for her contribution to Romantic-era music. She was the daughter of Richard Shepherd Rockstro, a prominent musicologist and flute player, and the niece of William Smith Rockstro, a musicologist, composer, and teacher. Despite her creative output, her work remains relatively obscure today, with limited documentation available about her life and artistic achievements. Her Serenade was published by Rudall, Carte & Co, a prestigious British instrument-making firm, particularly renowned for their flutes.
