This Romance by the English amateur flute player James Mathews is a wonderful piece, Written in 1868 in a Romantic style it’s actually beautifully straightforward to play. It’s worth the money for the front cover alone, as the photo of Mathews with his extraordinary gold flute is quite something!
From the Publisher
The flute part is generally low in the range and straight forward to play. It represents an interesting piece of the flute history in England and Birmingham. The composer performed it on his gold flute in December 1868, with the Birmingham Daily reporting that Mr. Mathews had performed it 'with immense effect'. It is dedicated to Mathew's friend, George Ingram, who was a pianist and organist in Birmingham.
