“Music to treasure.”
This is rare foray into the realm of music for flute and piano by the masterful arranger of music for flute ensembles, Mel Orriss and it's quite surprising that she doesn't write like this more often. The Rhapsody opens with a free cadenza, which leads into wistful melody. This becomes increasingly more intense through more and higher notes before subsiding to a reflective close. The Rondo is really quirky with its alternating 6/8 and 5/8, and is altogether happier and more celebratory as befits its birthday dedication. Music to treasure.
From the Publisher
These two short movements make use of the intervals of a 6th and a 5th as a basis for their themes,to reflect on the dedicatee’s 65th birthday. In its opening solo section, the Rhapsody ponders the passage of time reaching this milestone, and continues with the piano’s rather unsettling 6 – 5 reminder worrying away under the flute’s wistful melodic lines and recollections of decades past.
In complete contrast, the Rondo is a somewhat frantic '6/5' celebration of life; maybe to hint that despite the increasing speed in which a birthday seems to come around, there is much to celebrate!
