“This is a really good piece!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

This is a really good piece, especially if you are lucky enough to have an advance group of players to hand. The solo parts have prominance as you would expect, but there is plenty for the other four players to do as well - theirs is not a merely supporting role. The Prelude opens with the two soloists in dialogue which is puntuated by interjections from the group. The music then becomes more complex before leading into the Dance. This has a great rhythmic motif which has real energy and underpins the entire section. The divide between the soloists and the group is less distinct here with everyone playing a part in conveying the scattering character of the writing. A witty ending rounds it all off. This will take some preparation but it will be really worth it in the end!

From the Publisher

Winner of the National Flute Association’s 2004 Newly-Published Music Competition. This riveting composition features 2 solo players with flute ensemble accompaniment. The dramatic, and at times Arabesque, Prelude is followed by the spirited Dance, which is characterized by zesty Latin rhythms. Multiple payers may be used on each of the parts in the quartet accompaniment to create a larger ensemble. Prelude and Dance is a unique and entertaining piece with great audience appeal. It is an "absolute must" for the advanced ensemble. It was commissioned for and premiered by Nora Lee Garcia, Mary Karen Clardy, Lee Lattimore, Brian Luce, Andrea Redcay Graves, and Diane Boyd Schultz. This piece is an absolute "must" for the advanced ensemble.
