Manufacturer's Description

Our Signature Piccolo has many of the same features as our Custom Piccolo but at a more affordable price. Made by the same makers as our Handmade Custom Piccolos, this Grenadilla Wood piccolo has a Sterling Silver mechanism. The sound of this piccolo is sweet with a consistent timbre across all ranges.

Our Description

VQ Powell's handmade custom piccolos have for a long time been a preferred instrument of distinguished professional players. Joining the popular flute in the Powell Signature range is the Signature piccolo, also made at the Powell workshop in the USA. This is the first piccolo to be offered by Powell at this price point and uses high-grade aged Grenadilla-wood for the headjoint and body, with .925 solid keys - unheard of before at this price.

The tonal qualities are consistent over the register: good projection and a dark sound. The sound has extra depth due to the quality of the wood and the thickwall headjoint. Often, a thickwall headjoint can increase the resistance, but this is reduced to an ideal level by hand undercutting the tone holes.

General Condition

This piccolo has been adjusted and needed and 2 pads have been replaced. It has been given a new headjoint cork and the headjoint has been fitted. In very good condition throughout.

About Powell

In 1916, Verne Powell joined the Wm. S. Haynes Company to make wooden flutes and piccolos. By 1926, he was the shop foreman and was running much of the business at Haynes; later that year, he left Haynes to make his own flutes and Verne Q. Powell Flutes, Inc. was incorporated.

The instruments were immediately recognized as the very best a flutist could play and endorsements flowed in from flutists around the globe. In 1928, he completed his first all 14K Gold flute; soon piccolos and alto flutes were added. By 1930 the brand had representation in the Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Baltimore, and New York Orchestras. There were flutes which had a life of their own; #365 the “World’s Fair” Platinum flute of William Kincaid, #900 the only flute ever made entirely of 14K White Gold, #1142 the “Signature” Flute.

In 2016 Verne Q. Powell Flutes, Inc. was purchased by Buffet Crampon, joining nine other brands of wind instruments to complete the largest group of wind instrument manufacturers in the world.
