From the Publisher
The term Philotimo is still used today. In its simplest form, the term means conscientiously honouring one’s responsibilities and duties, and not allowing one’s honour, dignity, and pride to be sullied. The three movements could easily be titled – Honour, Dignity and Pride. The first movement is a lively piece with plenty of overlapping and interweaving of parts of bold statements and answering phrases This is followed by a much more stately feel to the start of the second movement but this soon becomes more agitated in the second subject before the reprise. The final movement is full of prodding and finger poking with constant interruptions from other parts. Things soon smooth out as the troubled waters are calmed down by the pouring oil of descending triads from the upper instruments.
