“Don't judge a book by its cover!”
This is an interesting book of duets in which a thumbnail extract of a well-known work is preceded by a page of related prep exercises. These are more difficult than the cover might suggest, with extracts ranging from Vivaldi's 'Goldfinch' theme to Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony. Surprisingly they are not always the most obvious tunes. For example, Debussy's L'Apres Midi highlights the 'tres modere' section in the middle of the piece and Dvorak's Symphony No 8 visits the 3rd movement. There are optional easy parts for alto and bass flutes and also piccolo so this really works if you are lucky enough to be starting out on those instruments. It also opens out a wonderful world of music that is not normally associated with a book of this kind. Now that's a real bonus!
From the Publisher
Listening, being together to be in perfect harmony , this is the very meaning of chamber music. Thanks to Claudine Bonodot and Gilles Martin for this beautiful renewed project!
The desire to introduce students to the classical music repertoire through short, highly elaborate transcriptions is what makes these two works so original. But not just any old way: in the first collection, preparatory exercises were attached to the pieces. In this volume, there are preludes that allow the following work to be played with greater ease and therefore with renewed happiness and joy. The ultimate goal for a musician!
