This volume contains twenty-five obbligato parts for solo flute from the Cantatas by J. S. Bach, which may be used as orchestral studies, as exercises in style and interpretation, or as studies for the "baroque traverso", an instrument which is becoming more widely used. This edition gives the original text of the Bach Gesellschaft Edition without editorial additions. Compared with those of his contemporaries, Bach's articulation markings are fairly complete, and possibly to avoid misinterpretation, this fastidious attention to detail is also found in many instances where the ornaments have been written out in full. These flute parts are, therefore, especially from the point of view of articulation, of particular value to the student who is eager to increase his knowledge of, and feeling for, Baroque music.
