Neptune, the god of fresh water, is the inspiration for this flute quartet. The music describes a small stream meandering through the countryside.
This piece begins with all four flutes entering one by one, a perfect fifth apart, until every note in the chromatic scale has been played. The tempo remains the same, but with the use of gradually shorter notes, it gives the impression of becoming faster. After this, the mood becomes more tranquil and melodic.
