Contains practice material for Options - the musicianship tests that are part of Music Medals. Options cover a range of skills from improvising to sight-reading and are a means of developing musical understanding and awareness. Designed as a teacher's resource, this book introduces four types of Options and demonstrates the standard required for each of the five Music Medals. Includes practice tests for all four Options: Call & Response, Make a Tune, Question & Answer, and Sight-Reading, with helpful descriptions of the tests and their objectives. Also contains examples of the downloaded pages used in the assessment.
Difficulty level, roughly compared to ABRSM exam grades. 0 is beginner, 9 is advanced (beyond grade 8).
This is a very useful book whether or not you participate in Music Medals. The Options in question are
- call and response
- make a tune
- question and answer
and although these are of course seamlessly integrated into every lesson, it's nice sometimes to have a little backup. The material is organised progressively through the Music Medal stages and it's value I think is more in terms of the ideas it generates rather than in the actual exercises given. As with all AB publications, it's very well laid out with loads of background information for those taking the test. And when you're done with this perhaps you could move onto to the equally stimulating Musicanship in Practice books!
