Thinking about the cyclical nature of the moon; the contrast between dark and light; dull and glimmering; the symmetry of the cycle; roughly 28 days - translating this into music: the periods creates by the waxing and waning rests between phrases; black notes and white notes; long notes with no texture and long notes with trills, timbrel trills, vibrato, flutter tongue; both flutes using their own symmetrical, uninvertible scales (D, Eb, F#, G, A, A#, C#, D)(D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D) and the section 71-136 where the flutes play inversions of each other; the section 42-69 going through a whole cycle of 28 bars.
