Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the incidental music for Aleksandr Ostrovsky's musical drama, The Snow Maiden, in 1873. This movement, the Melodrama takes place in Act II, intimately scored only for strings. This music was used again as the Entr'acte to Act III of Tchaikovsky's incidental music for Hamlet, Opus 67a.
