An excellent show piece for an advanced flute player with a good technique. The great flautist Taffanel performed it in 1864.The work is a Theme and variations based on a melody from an opera by Niedermeyer about the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Completed in 1849, the fantasia is in two parts. It has a charmingly worked out theme in D major followed by another theme with four variations.This edition is based on the original publication from the private collection of Roz Trubger. R. S.
