An excellent show piece for an advanced flute player with a good technique. The great flautist Taffanel performed it in 1864.The work is a Theme and variations based on a melody from an opera by Niedermeyer about the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Completed in 1849, the fantasia is in two parts. It has a charmingly worked out theme in D major followed by another theme with four variations.This edition is based on the original publication from the private collection of Roz Trubger. R. S. Pratten was an English flute player and designer of the Pratten flute. Extras: (mp3 play-alongs available to purchase from the Trubcher website)
