“Sparkling music for sparkling!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

Each of these six movements uses the flutes imaginatively to depict the character of the chosen gem. Diamond starts with an arresting introduction before a bustling 6/8 bursts into life and Ruby uses triplets as flashes of light to add texture to a simple melody. Topaz is rhythmic and strong, the addition of two piccolos completely changing the sound while Emerald has a sumptuous feel created by alto and bass flutes. Lapis Lazuli and Black Onyx are shorter and with their simpler rhythms perhaps the easiest to put together. There are plenty of technical challenges to be met in this piece so it's great that each one would stand alone, possibly as an encore. Sparking music for sparkling players!

From the Publisher

Commissioned by Flute Ensemble Gimonaus, six flautists from western Japan. The request was for a sextet, so I decided on a suite describing six differing characters.
Though I have done a number of flute ensembles, it took a conversation with my wife to learn about various jewels and ores. This was a completely new take for my thinking, and I decided to give it a try.

The movements is are Diamond, Ruby, Topaz, Emerald, Lapis Lazuli, and Black Onyx.
Whether or not you love jewels, or know a lot or little about them, please imagine yourself a bejeweled person to perform this suite with an elegant sound.

The 1st through 3rd movements use no alto and bass flutes, considering the limited amount of instruments out there. Both of them are used on the final three movements, exploring the musical potential of the piece. The movements may be performed independently. Please discover your brilliance in presenting this work!
