I commissioned ‘This Invisible World’ after I fell in love with Carl’s ‘Duo’ for flute and piano, which I have also played in the past and is stocked by Just Flutes. The first performance of TIW took place at the 1999 National Flute Association Convention in Atlanta, USA. It is hauntingly beautiful, written in a warm/romantic/jazzy/minimalist/mesmeric style, taking the listener on a long internal journey – a world of sensuality and spirituality. When I asked Carl to write the piece, I was wanting to make a statement highlighting the alternative and inspired way of ‘seeing’ this world, which is common to all people and goes beyond seeing with the eyes; I wanted to use this piece as a catalyst for projects that work with and for the Visually Impaired. The piece is written in one continuous movement. There is an obsessive recurrence of themes that comes close to being minimalist and mesmeric, with a hint of jazz influence too....but in the end it retains a romantic and individualistic musical language, which is fundamentally improvisational in its conception. The bass reveals an obsessive undercurrent that preserves tension rather like the way blind people feel their way with their walking sticks, as they negotiate their way through their lives. ‘This Invisible World’ takes a peak into the inner world within us all, the world of love, hope and will, the inner world, which helps us overcome so much in life.
I am formulating plans to eventually link this piece to a Towards Humanity initiative helping raise awareness and funds for the visually impaired. So far, I have struck out....but I am still looking! Working with the blind, I have often been inspired by their inner strength in rising above their ‘disabilities’ – they succeed in transforming this disability into a catalyst for tremendous insight and inner power. We have so much to learn from these wonderful people, who often still exist on the ‘margins of society’, while humanity chooses to obsess on our more savage and destructive tendencies.
