From the Publisher

“Innocente” by Hilary Taggart was inspired by this famous painting by Giorgio de Chirico, which was finished in 1914. It depicts a young girl happily playing with a hoop, as she runs up a sunlit street. However, a few paces further up the street, the shadow of a male statue awaits to darken her world. The painting seems to express the vulnerability of the young girl to peril. The precise nature of the implied narrative of the painting and this music, is left to individual conjecture. It is, as the artist describes in the title of his painting, simply a mystery.

Giorgio de Chirico wrote in a letter to a friend, January 1919:

“I for my part believe that a place that paralyzes and freezes the brightness of noonday, hides more secrets than a dark room in which someone is holding a séance”.

This flute and piano piece is a musical narrative of innocence and anguish. The serenity of the young “Innocente” is insidiously undermined by a sense of foreboding, as a relentless, threatening march unfolds the drama of unforeseen turmoil and unhappiness. However, fate does hold eventual release from this oppression and the dark memories gradually dissipate and fade. The music finally delivers the hallowed sanctuary of peace, tranquillity and freedom.
