From the Publisher
Jose Vianna da Motta (1868-1948) holds such a prominent place in the history of Portugese music that, even among those who are unaware of the details of his work, his name resonates as part of the cultural imagination.
He was 14 when he composed this Sonata. The transcription was based on the autographed manuscript which contains a piano part accompanying a sketch of the flute part, as well as a more complete version of the flute part.
