“Unusual!”
'A chilling story' isn't perhaps the best idea on which to base a piece of flute music but this is a really interesting work. The writing is convincing, with both the flute and the piano used in a variety of ways to characterise the narrative. Tempo changes are enhanced by the use of different textures. Varied articulated passages alternate with melodic fragments, solo passages, flute harmonics, piano scrunch chords and technical flourishes for both instruments. The result is a fascinating mix of colours that is quite compelling. It will also provide great programme note material and really give your audience something different to think about!
