The Garden Suite was written in 2023 for violinist Margaret Friar, a friend and musician who inspired its creation when playing together in many trios, quartets and quintets. She has a beautiful garden and it seemed a good subject for her own special trio. The combination of 2 Violins and Viola is not one which boasts a huge wealth of repertoire, and it presented a new challenge. The 4 pieces in the collection are suitable for players of at least grade 6 standard and are useful for encouraging good balance and essential team work. Because of the more narrow compass range of the 3 instruments, extra thought will be needed to balance the tone produced, as the instruments overlap and weave together. There is therefore much scope in its interpretation. It was a lot of fun to write and pays homage to a special friend.
