“Feel-good music!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

This ebullient work is full of joy and happiness. The opening section zips along with a foot-tapping rhythm, the slower section is straight out of a romantic film scene and the closing section is a jaunty and slightly off-kilter 3/4. There are plenty of notes here but the challenge is approachable, and the composer's own piano reduction loses very little of the energy of the original. This is feel-good music at its best and audiences will love it!!

From the Publisher

"Music does not only hold unending enjoyment. In the chords of music, Plato found an amazing instrument for developing the soul. Indeed there is no doubt about the fact that melodies, sonnets, and even the simplest flute tone enrich the human spirit and make life more pleasant." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Music is an indispensable element in the lives of human beings. In nature, we see the essence of this principle reflected. Plato imagined the cosmos as a live animal: all parts are connected in harmony. From this point of view, the universe forms a large pentagram in which all notes flow together perfectly. This is confirmed around us every day. The twittering of a canary, the sputtering of fire, the sparkle of a waterfall pattering and falling on stones, the rattle of a snake that takes on a threatening attitude, or even the silence of the desert are expressions of Euterpe (the muse of music).

In Greek mythology, the muses are nine archaic goddesses of arts and science. Apollo is their leader. Euterpe ("the wonderful," "with a pleasant character," or "the well-spirited") is the muse of music and mainly functions as the patroness of the flute. She is mostly pictured with flowers, and holding a double flute. Her name means "she who makes cheerful, the captivating." In this concertino, the composer attmepts to reflect the muse of music - Euterpe - by giving sound to all her charms.

This work is dedicated to Jesús Alcántara. It was first performed by the flutist Raquel Alcántara on May 24, 2003, as a posthumous homage to her father, Jesús, in the Auditorium Florida de Paiporta (Valencia, Spain).

The enlosed CD features the original version (with the accompaniment played by a concert band). Later, Ferrer Ferran wrote this version for flute with piano accompaniment.
