The Elements for Flute Choir by Cynthia Folio. The four movements of The Elements are programmatic musical settings that reflect natural phenomena: “Earth” is grounded in the Perfect 5th interval, which symbolizes stability and “earthiness” because of its consonance. “Air” expresses the fluidity and intermingling of air through overlapping harmonic progressions. “Water” captures the motion of waves through a triplet motive that is tossed back and forth between the flute parts. “Fire” embodies the energy and unpredictability of this element with a fast tempo, double tonguing, syncopations, and flutter tonguing.
