Unmistakeably Italian in style, this piece really packs a great deal into a short time span. The dark piano introduction leads into a flute recitative before the main melody emerges. Increasing in intensity, there is always a restless quality to the writing which is still there when the music slips into the major. There is all of the drama of Mercadante here but the technical demands are more modest, making it available to a wider audience. All of the action and less of the stress!
