I decided to allow two excerpts from 'Le Marteau sans maître' to be set as compulsory pieces for the Lucerne Festival Academy 2007. Ever since Aurele Nicolet played these solo passages for alto flute to me, I know that they would be perfectly suitable for study purposes even outside the context of the original work. It was not my primary intention to publish the excerpts, but due to the demand and appeals from my publisher, they are now available to interested flautists in the present publication.
