Richard Kursch (1879-1949) was born in Berlin. He studied piano and composition with Philipp Scharwenka at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory located in Berlin, and then was active for several years in Berlin as a pianist and composer. This charming work was composed in 1911. Originally score for a trio of two violins and cello, this is a symphony in miniature, with a sonata form first movement, then a scherzo, slow movement and a lively finale. All parts contribute equally, with plenty of interest for all players. The harmonic language is rich but approachable, and is rewarding for performers and audiences alike.
