“A future classic.”
This is an amazing piece for solo piccolo which is both challenging and exciting. There are extended techniques throughout and it's all quite physical to play. Trumpet buzz with gliss, voice grunt with note muttering or note, trills with gliss, lip pizz, sharp air hiss sounds, as well as the more regular note bending, flutter-tonguing and wind sounds combine to create swirls of weird textures and a wonderful energy worthy of a celebration. Written for Michael Cox and commissioned by the London Sinfonietta this has the pedigree to become a contemporary classic.
From the Publisher
The London Sinfonietta commissioned the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship-winning composer George Lewis to write a solo work for its piccolo performer, Michael Cox, in celebration of its very first concert. The shouts of celebration — “Hieperdepiep, hoera!” — at the end of a Dutch birthday song reminded Lewis of the African American fife and drum tradition in its onomatopoeia, inspiring his Celebration to give the piccolo both melodic and percussive roles.
