This is a wonderful book of solo gems which are essentially Nicholson's elaborate variations on the popular tunes of the day. These range from slow dances such as 'Within a Mile of Edinboro' Town' which become increasingly more florid, to faster ones like Lord Wellington which are tricky from the outset. There are very few performance directions other than speed so there is plenty of scope for personal input which is made a little easier with the help of the Ornamentation Guide. This is a book to just pick up play - ideal on those 'no Moyse please!' days!

Charles Nicholson was born in Liverpool in 1795 and died in London in 1837. He was the most esteemed, yet controversial flutist of his time. Many of these solos are delightful as encores. All of the pieces provide technical challenges, but, more importantly, they reveal insight into Nicholson's exploration of the expressive potential of the flute.
