Originally composed for flute and organ, and later arranged for flute and orchestra, this 2023 version of Air for flute and piano is a poignant addition to Liebermann’s substantial body of flute works. Best known for his much-loved Sonata and Concerto, Liebermann once again demonstrates his gift for lyricism and atmosphere.

The work begins in an eerie soundworld: the piano repeats a chromatic bass line while the flute weaves a long, plaintive melody. The metronome marking of crotchet equals 50 stretches the phrases to their limits, demanding exceptional breath control and careful pacing to sustain the musical line. Guided by wandering piano harmonies, the flute part builds with almost agonising slowness, through dramatic crescendos interspersed with moments of sweetness, towards a euphoric triple forte climax. The writing spans the full range of the instrument, with emphasis on the middle and upper registers.

This is a piece of pure melodic study, and though it does not include fast technical passages, the challenges here lie in stamina, tonal variety, and expressive pacing. The player must sustain intensity over long arcs, balance delicately with the piano, and shape colour changes that keep the line alive. When achieved successfully, the outcome is a raw and beautiful work of pure flute expression.

Lasting about 9.5 minutes, Air is best suited to advanced players and makes a compelling choice for recitals. It confirms Liebermann’s reputation as one of the most significant voices for the flute in contemporary music, and offers performers a deeply rewarding outlet for lyrical expression.
