“Special music.”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

Undine Smith Moore has based this Suite on authentic American spirituals or 'sorrow songs' of the enslaved peoples. This combination of instruments is perfect for the soul-searching character of her music which seems to come right from the heart. 'Nobody knows' is plaintive and moving with imaginative textures that add interest to the colouring. 'Heard the Preaching is more upbeat with a very positive ending, "Who is that yonder" uses the alto flute to great effect, reflecting the more enigmatic and fluid nature of the song. This is the most esoteric of the four movements. Shout All Over Over God's Heaven uses a jazz-influences and high flute writing to bring the work to a sparkling conclusion. Highly recommended, especially if you're researching this special kind of music.

From the Publisher

Dr. Moore was one of the most prominent African-American women composers of the 20th Century. Published here for the first time, her Afro-American Suite (1969) has four movements based on traditional Negro spirituals, but adapted harmonically using the modern composer’s tools. A very accessible chamber music piece for instrumental “voices,” well suited for recitals or church. (The slow movement is written for alto flute).
