“A winner!”
Interesting textures, different styles, modern articulations and a sense of the unusual turn this famous Albinoni melody on its head. A mesmeric rhythmic opening played with air sounds underpins the first hearing of the tune in a measured 2/4. The change to the more usual 3/4 highlights the skill of a piccolo player comfortable at the top of the instrument. The piano accompaniment is subtle and supportive throughout, and the various style inflections, especially the hint of jazz, are an added bonus. The whole piece works extremely well and would be particularly effective in a mixed ability group where some players are less confident. A winner!
From the Publisher
Adagio Nuovo is a Paraphrase on Albinoni motif, discovered (it is still questionable) in the mid-twentieth century by the Italian musicologist and composer Remo Giazotto. In my version I used two time signatures. The first part of the piece is 4/4, which gives the piece a more measured, even slow character. And in the second part, the time signature of 3/4 (which is where Albinoni’s Adagio is written) gives more dynamics and movement to the piece. Of course, in my version of Adagio one can find influences from numerous existing adaptations of this masterpiece by Albinoni.
