I have long been an admirer of the American composer Stephen Foster (1826-64), who wrote so many wonderful songs. So when I was asked by Michael Aubrey to write a piece for his Beaufort Ensemble I decided to create a medley of some of Foster’s best-known songs. I have been fairly faithful to the original compositions in my arrangement, but in the last one (‘Camptown Races’) I allowed myself a little flight of fantasy!
