Cesar Cui originally wrote these lovely pieces for flute, violin and piano but as they work equally well for two flutes it's excellent to have both versions available in one volume. With three fast and two slow movements to enjoy, there is plenty of variety in a short space of time. The Badinage is robust, the Scherzo has flurries of running notes and the more substantial Waltz is very elegant. The Berceuse is simpler in construction than the more intricate Nocturne. Tuneful and harmonically satisfying, each of these five gems could stand alone, but they are such a treat it would be much nicer to play them all!

The 5 Petits duos for flute, violin and piano are dedicated to the last legitimate successor to the tsarist throne and his sister: À Leurs Altesses Impériales Monseigneur le Grand Duc Michel Alexandrowitch et Madame la Grande Duchesse Olga Alexandrowna. He played the flute, she the violin. These charming short pieces are now available in a new edition with an additional alternative second flute.
