These are great. Admittedly when I first looked at it I thought it was not for me contemporary stuff and all that but I was wrong you need to play these before making a decision. Starts off with some basics such as Vocalise 1. Quite tricky to do as printed. They get more difficult as they go through all the keys. Homage to Poulenc is lovely and for anyone who has played the sonata you already know how tricky it is well playing this helps it concentrates on movement 2 and again in all keys. Nos 3 and 4 are on playing octaves and articulation. All in all I would really recommend this lovely tunes. Don’t be put off when it is said up to grade 9. I’m grade 5/6 and can play these excercises. Buy it you won’t be disappointed.

As exercise books go, this is one of my favourites.
Each vocalise has a warm up section at the beginning, with a description and helpful tips on how to play the things you're about to work on. They're all lovely tunes which makes them very enjoyable to play, which is just as well as they are quite challenging to play well!

5 out of 5 “Great for improving your tone whatever your level.”

Roderick has written a book of really tuneful vocalises that work on many levels. These studies bring together many of Rod's teaching approaches. Whatever standard you are, you will benefit from working on these.

Don't be tempted to jump straight to the tunes (pleasing as they are) but start with the warm ups and then move on. The written instructions make it clear how to approach each one.

Each vocalise develops a different aspect of your tone and phrasing. At first sight the tunes are fairly simple but they are definitely not easy! The more detailed your approach to them, the more you improve.

I have really enjoyed using these and, as a result, my playing is now much freer.
