“Mexican fun!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - chrish@justflutes.com

La Bruja Llorana brings out all the colours of Mexico in a work that, despite the duel narratives of blood-sucking witches and ghosts that haunt cemeteries, is really fun to play! Starting slowly, the rhythms of these two traditional songs are interwoven and become more frenzied as the speeds increase. There means that there is a technical element to the writing, needing finger skills from all the players to be able to capture this journey effectively.  Whistle sounds and flutter-tonguing add texture. Played well, this would make a great concert finale.

From the Publisher

Mexico has many stories, magical places, haunted houses, legends of ghosts, demons, witches and sorceresses. However, there are two traditional Mexican songs from the southeast of the country that have to do with two particular mythical characters. One of them is "La Bruja," in the rhythm of son jarocho from the Sotavento region south of the State of Veracruz, and the other "La Llorona," a traditional song from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec that is played in the rhythm of mazurka. This arrangement brings these two songs together in representation of these traditions.

Winner in the Flute Choir category in the 2019 NFA Newly Published Music Competition.
