Our Description

Ikebana was composed for the flute society of AZ. One of its members is a friend, and Carol is accomplished at Ikebana. I imagined a piece that would come together like a series of separate flower stems into a lifelike arrangement. The idea of flutes as flowers was a new idea for me, and the piece has a unique feel from my other pieces.

Editor's Choice

You won't go home singing the tune having played this piece but you may have been beguiled by the atmospheric writing. There is plenty of interplay between the parts and the ranges of the various flutes have been used effectively. The inclusion of the now fashionable but sadly mostly unaffordable contrabass flute does add extra depth to the texture, so for a successful perfomance that part would really need to be taken over by another bass instrument. Definitely worth the effort though.

Difficulty guide: 6-7
