Also available: Getting Started with Theory

These books do exactly what they say on the cover - get you started with some basic principals in both aural and theory. The very first topic in the theory book uses graphic notation and encourages the pupil to experiment with either the voice or an instrument to link the sound with the symbols on the page. The aural book kicks off with some really basic (but often overlooked) listening exercises and then uses the CD to shape listening patterns. This systematic approach is taken right through both books. They are not linked directly to an exam syllabus but the relevant subjects are all started on here.

From the Publisher

The Getting Started series are step-by-step guides introducing key skills to the beginner musician. In turn they enable teachers to cover all aspects of music in a time-limited lesson. Getting Started with Aural is an enjoyable and practical introduction to aural for beginner instrumentalists and singers. Exercises are presented in a fun and interesting way that enables young musicians to improve their aural perception in preparation for practical exams. Designed to be used alongside instrumental/singing lessons, this book is packed with activities to do at home as part of practice time. It also comes with a CD crammed with activities to listen to and write about.

Difficulty guide: 1-3
