This short piece is made up of two distinct sections: Bars 1-8 and 9-70. In Section 1 the atmospheric rumblings of the piano develop into a frenzy by the time the open bar 6 is reached. Here, both piccolo and piano should improvise freely, manically and atonally. In Section 2, where the music veers restlessly between different tonal areas, the demonic rhythm must remain metronomic throughout.
