Heather Hammond has mixed her own compositions with well-known tunes to aid both rhythm and reading in this valuable book. The 'Wallace and Gromit' Theme, Pink Panther and Pachbel's Canon rub shoulders with numbers such as Funk Factory and Ballad for Erik to produce a balanced addition to the tutor.

More of the same from Heather Hammond - another colourful book containing some excellent material for younger players. Starting with revision exercises , the middle register is then tackled immediately. Progress is much more speedy than in book 1 but the combination of rhythm exercises, simple theory, good illustration and a decent accompanying CD is still appealing. However, an approximate grade 2+ standard is reached by the end, by which time the format could prove a litte limiting.

This is an interesting addition to the crowded world of the flute tutor. As is increasingly common, this book comes with a DVD as well as 2 playalong CDs, and the quality of both resources is good. The DVD (20min) only covers the basics (posture, how to put the flute together, maintenence etc) up to the production of the first note. You might not agree with everything but it's all very clearly presented. The CDs are unusual in that the performance and the backing only are on the same track number, which might encourage pupils to play without the tune to help. The book itself progresses slowly, the emphasis being on establishing a good sound through small technical steps. Middle octave G is reached by the end with F sharp and B flat the only accidentals covered. The rhythmic content is also fairly basic.
There are obviously weakness (for example there is no explanation of key signature) but It has enough going for it to be considered in certain circumstances - and that's about the best you can say for any of them!

As we all know, Bill Holcombe is a great arranger so it will come as no surprise to find that this upbeat tune by Henry Fillmore is another winner. It's not easy (4flats modulate seamlessly to 5) but the Circus Bee buzzes along at a great pace in a real Amercican romping style. Top B flats have to be negotiated but there is a good balance between rhythmic unity and independent writing and so everyone should be satisfied. It works best with the accompaniment and if you add some drums as well you can have a real party!

This suite of three pieces charts the stages in the development of a butterfly from caterpillar (a waltz with plenty of gentle major 2nds in the accompaniment that gradually winds down to a slow 2) to chrysalis( lots of chromatic effects) to the butterfly itself waking up with trills and fluttering away in 6/8. The parts have a good deal of independence but Phyllis Louke is an excellent writer so the challenge is always manageable. The style could probably best be described as enigmatic - I suspect this is real 'girly' music but none the worse for that.

Here are 6 really funky flute trios with which to entice your students. The pieces are jazzy with some syncoptated rhythms but usually at least two parts play the same pattern together. Straightforward keys are used throughout with A major the most complex and the note range is up to top E. Top note reading is therefore stretched for flute 1. The CD is of a good standard and has perfomance, accompaniment only and a track minus each of the three parts. You can even use this book for 1 or 2 players so it won't be a disaster if someone fails to turn up for the session but it is also suitable for larger groups. All round good value I think.
