Musikalische Kurzgeschichten (from Kindertrios Book 2)
Price:
£10.50
Composer:
Gottsche - Niessner Friedgund
Publisher:
ZIM
Grade:
5-6
Category:
Flute Trios
Code:
GOT030
Editor's Notes :
Editor's Choice
This is another volume of imaginative trios using contemporary techniques. Activities such as stamping whilst playing and cross rhythms in 8/8 (Regentanz) extend to glissandi, multiphonics and breath trills in the remainder of the book. This is much more of a rhythmic workout than book one and very enjoyable.

At first glance these short little trios would seem to be quite straightforward and indeed they are unless you wish to add in the contemporary techniques. Different ways of blowing, simple multiphonics, glissandi and trills are used to great effect to portray animals as varied as fish, elephants and birds. This is a really interesting publication - even if the text is all in German!

We all know by now that Ian Clarke is a composer of huge importance to flute players. Zig Zag Zoo is a typical example of his ability to be creative whilst at the same time providing a totally do-able experience at whatever level you happen to be. This very entertaining ensemble uses all the effects that you might now expect - multiphonics, quarter-tone grace notes, fluttering, vocals etc - and harnesses them into a funky work that will be universally loved. He writes so intelligently, scoring the parts in order of difficulty so that everyone feels included - success guaranteed. But this is only half the story. There is also a contemporary flute techniques workout included that could provide enough material for a whole terms' teaching if need be. Improvisation and group activity are the keys here. Call and response games, fun with harmonics, and 'Rhythm Land - rhythmic lego!' showing how rhythms can be used within Zig Zag Zoo itself can all be developed endlessly both in the context of this piece and as stand-alone work. Whatever your views on performing this style of music there is absolutely no doubt that it is indeed a very useful addition to our repertoire.

I don't know how Ricky Lombardo keeps on producing flute ensemble writing of this quality but I'm so glad he does. This particular gem roughly divides the group into 3 + 2 so there is a 'safety in numbers' element to the ensemble set up - so helpful when training younger players. This piece is rhythmically straightforward and the note ranges reasonable for all parts. It's quite fast though (Flusters) and there are some really crunchy harmonies (Clusters). It's best with alto and bass flutes but doesn't come to grief without and even the piccolo could be dispensed with. It might not be to everyone's taste but believe me - it's fun!
Instrumentation:

These are lovely trios - their appeal lies in their tuneful nature. The material is shared out equally amongst the parts as you would expect from this Baroque composer and each of the short sonatas is approachable by players of all types. Success in performance is all about ensemble skills and musicianship - hooray! No there isn't a score and yes it is expensive but this publication will give years and years of pleasure.
Variations sur Rigoletto (picc/flute/pno)
Price:
£19.10
Composer:
Rabboni, Guiseppe
Publisher:
BIL
Grade:
8-9
Category:
Piccolo
Code:
RAB160
Editor's Notes :
Editor's Choice
Rigoletto has always seemed to me to be a very dark story to which Verdi set the most amazingly cheerful music. Once you can master the thousands of notes on offer in this piece you should find that happily Rabboni has concentrated on the positive side of things and produced a challenging set of variations that's really great fun to play. All the main themes are here and although the writing won't seriously challenge ensemble it will stretch technique and stamina - it's nearly 15 minutes long. Much of the material in the flute and piccolo parts is either dovetailed or in close harmony and there are cadenzas scattered throughout. As usual with this type of work the pianist gets an easy ride. There isn't that much repertoire for this combination - buy and enjoy!
