Intelligent flute writing means that the sensible rhythms and note ranges allow logical and progressive learning and the quirky titles should spark some imaginative playing. For example, Katrina Penman's 'Life of a Silk Worm' comes with 'loudly whisper the word Chomp as the caterpillar bites a leaf' and her' Little Spanish Dancer' uses a foot stamp, both of which are exciting first steps into the world of contemporary techniques. The spread of styles is impressive so dances, romantic melodies, the jazz-inspired vignette 'Jack in the Box', concepts such as 'The Unquenchable Fire' or ' A Time for Dreaming', happy music and even a 'Picnic in the Park' means that there is something for everyone. Added bonuses are the straightforward piano parts, the full descriptions of the both the composers and their pieces, and the fully resourced YouTube platform which contains performance and backing tracks.
